A lot of us can remember songs we wrote as angst-ridden 15-year-olds. Most of us would not want to share that material with the wider world. A question of privacy as much as quality, most of the time.
Cleveland-raised artist Kate Voegele's teenage compositions, on the other hand, have catapulted her to stardom. Her dad found a few songs she had put on a four-track, and - with her permission - began to distribute her work. Considering the results, Voegele told us, "all is forgiven" as regards her dad's invasion of privacy. The songwriter has become a post-modern sensation: notching more than 16 million MySpace spins, landing on Billboard's hot 100 chart, and winning top honors in the pop category during the 2005 USA Songwriting competition. I talked to Voegele by phone today. Here's a bit of what she said:
When did you start writing songs?
Were these the "rough demos" that landed you on tour with John Mayer?
Now, you went to college while still performing, right?
That was probably a good decision, to develop as a songwriter.
Having experienced so much success, so quickly, how do you manage to sort of stay in touch with your own voice, and allow that to develop?
Tell us about being one of the first artists on the MySpace label. They use their resources but they use them in the right way. And they listen to my opinion. Tom Anderson even called and said, so what songs do you want on your record? And I was like, hold on. Because that’s not usually the way it works. Especially when you’re a young female, it’s so hard to be recognized as a legitimate songwriter or a legitimate artist. They want you to be the super mysterious weird songwriter chick, who normally isn’t mainstream anyway, or they want to throw you into some slutty outfit, and have someone else sing your songs and you pretend you do. I enjoy lesser known alt country folk, but also Britney Spears, stuff like that. There’s a place for all kinds of music, but I personally feel like I don’t fit into either of those roles.
